My Engineering Journey

Krystal Foster portrait beside her engineering journey

Krystal Foster

Mechatronics Engineering Student

My interest in engineering began long before I even knew what an engineer was. Growing up in St. Vincent, I was always curious about how things worked. As a child, I would build pretend computers out of pizza boxes, creating my own versions of technology simply because I was fascinated by it.

Some of my favorite memories are of watching my uncle work on Wranglers in the yard. I was always interested in the different mechanical parts, how they fit together, and how he knew what needed to be fixed. He was also a pilot, which sparked my interest in airplanes and how something so large and complex could fly. I looked up to him and thought what he did was incredibly cool. Without realizing it at the time, those experiences were shaping my interest in mechanics, technology, and problem-solving.

As I grew older, that childhood curiosity developed into a passion for mechatronics engineering. I discovered a field that brings together many of the things that had always interested me: mechanical systems, electronics, programming, and the opportunity to create something that actually works.

Today, through my studies at Morgan State University and my internships at Idaho National Laboratory, I've had the opportunity to turn that curiosity into hands-on engineering experience. From designing mechanical fixtures and developing robotic systems to exploring electrical system improvements, I continue to enjoy learning how different engineering disciplines come together to solve real-world problems.
